Rah-Numa
Foundation (Rah-Numa means the one who leads the way by
example) was registered;
Vide # CSR-066 of 2004-2005, in September 2004, as a
charitable social organization, to ameliorate the
sufferings of the impoverished and those living on edge. The focus
of its activities is on the rural belt along
old river Satluj, covering a population of over 15,000 people in a
remote corner of Pakpattan which is a
small district town and itself one of the three most backward areas
of the Punjab province (Pakistan).
A major chunk of this rural population particularly the
elderly, the widows and their children are living
below the poverty line and in misery. Young & able-bodied
individuals have mostly migrated to urban
areas in search of jobs & those remaining behind, because of lack
of education & jobs are becoming prey to
social vices. Young girls in these poor families are illiterate,
and without any skills, therefore at the
marriageable age their parents find it difficult to get a suitable
match for them.
There are either no medical facilities at all in the area or
because of longer distances to Basic Health Units
(BHUs), set up by the government, are out of reach of these indigent
people. Similarly the absence of
awareness and proper veterinary services is causing
mortalities amongst the livestock, thus resulting in
losses to subsistence farmers.
It was for reasons listed above that this area was
selected for carrying out charitable activities. |
